Sarah Cunningham of Portsmouth Master Gardeners said August is a difficult month for gardeners during an apparent severe drought and recommended strategies such as succession planting, fall planting of perennials and newly sited trees, and careful watering plans. "August is a tough month for gardeners, and it doesn't help that we've had such a drought," Cunningham said.
Cunningham advised gardeners to compost kitchen biodegradable waste (coffee grounds, eggshells) but to avoid meat and dairy, to mix grass clippings and leaves into compost, and to plan irrigation when establishing new lawns or trees. She also noted the Master Gardeners will resume talks in September, maintain a Facebook presence, and hold a plant sale and fall festival on Oct. 17; applications and volunteer information are at pmgv.org.
