Charlie Bowman, representing Portsmouth Economic Development, said the store will be an "anchor institution" and noted the city's interest in sales and property tax revenue from the site. "Most of all, we're looking forward to collecting that sales tax and property tax on this building so that we can do bigger and better things in the community," Bowman said.
Mayor Shannon Glover welcomed Dollar Tree to Portsmouth City on behalf of the Portsmouth City Council and residents, describing the opening as more than a ribbon cutting. He cited new employment opportunities, tax revenue and the company's willingness to work with community partners: "This corporate citizen is also opening its heart to the community," the mayor said. Mayor Glover also acknowledged that the store manager, Diane, lives in Portsmouth.
