Kohler Family YMCA gives construction and fundraising update to Downey council

She described current construction work — underground basements for mechanical systems, stormwater chamber systems under parking lots, and restoration of a legacy sign at the Downey Avenue entrance — and invited residents to follow progress via the Y’s communications channels.
Vargas said the Y is serving roughly 240 children across five Downey elementary schools through expanded learning opportunities, and that their early‑learning readiness program at Furman Park serves about 50 participants. On future amenities, she said Phase 2 (including a warm‑water indoor pool) is "not ready to move into" until the Y secures a smaller fundraising target (about $2.5M–$3M) and additional traction for the project.
