Janice Crawford, president of the Western Wake Farmers Market, told the Morrisville Town Council that the market is more than a place to buy produce; it is an economic engine and community builder that partners with town staff and volunteers. "I'm Janice Crawford, the president of Western Wake Farmers Market and the market board of directors," she said when presenting the group's message and handout to the council.
Vendors underscored that the market supports small businesses and families. Farmer Clay Smith said he has sold at the market since 2009 and that his sales there have been "about $50,000 a year," noting that the gross supports his family after production costs. Crawford and vendors highlighted that the market donated nearly 6,000 pounds of fresh food to the local food pantry over the last 19 months and credited town staff, particularly named staff liaisons, for ongoing operational support.
