The Jackson County Legislature moved on April 29 to advance an ordinance to appropriate up to $60,000 from the 2026 general fund to award a contract to Johnson Controls Inc. for a new fire-notification alarm system at the historic Truman Courthouse.
"This is a new fire notification alarm system that we need to update... It will not exceed $60,000 Johnson Controls. They're pretty good, best in the business," the County Executive told legislators while explaining the need to maintain the courthouse's historic value and public function.
Members asked procurement and sole‑source questions; the Chair and General Counsel noted Johnson Controls may be the only compatible vendor given prior installation work tied to the jail. The motion to move the ordinance forward passed during roll call with six yes votes and three excused/absent members recorded.
The executive said the upgrade is part of broader work to keep the building open and usable for the public and staff. The ordinance will proceed through the county's perfection/adoption steps as scheduled.
