Board hears curriculum update: 170 gifted students identified and new resources up for 30‑day review

Miss Strynes presented the curriculum committee's work on the district gifted program and supplemental instructional resources. She told the board the district currently identifies about 170 gifted students and that 20 of those qualify for subject‑area acceleration. "We currently have a 170 gifted students identified in our district," Strynes said while outlining identification tools (NWEA, M‑STEP and IQ assessments) and an annual testing window for interested families.
Strynes also introduced four vendor resources the district will place on a 30‑day review: Albert (SAT/ACT and advanced practice for grades 9–12), Quick Reads (K–12 fluency passages for intervention), Quill (grammar practice for 9th–10th graders, to be used in pre‑AP classes) and vocabulary.com (9th–10th). Those resources will return to the board for a decision at the April meeting. Strynes described family outreach (gifted family newsletters and optional weekly check‑ins with the gifted coordinator) and professional development plans for teachers in the coming year.
