Residents urge pause on Title IX changes, raise book and safety concerns during public comment

During the public-comment period, many community members addressed Title IX policy changes and other district concerns. Speakers urged the board to postpone implementation of the department-of-education’s final rule until court challenges are resolved, raised worries about bathroom and locker-room safety, and said the policy changes lack clear definitions for gender identity and expression.

Art Holly said, "We're all created and born as male and female," and urged trustees not to adopt the changes; Stephanie Boone told the board she reviewed social-media commentary suggesting families are considering private schools and urged listening to the public. Missy Krill cited specific incidents and said the mandates could endanger girls and were a reason to pause adoption. Separately, Robin Vanderjack raised a complaint about a book review process and said she had been denied a review despite following procedures; Ryan Folkeny described a violent assault on his son and urged officials to view video evidence and take stronger safety measures. Other commenters asked the district to reinstate class rankings, fix a failing audiovisual system at the administration building, and address a bus-driver shortage and pay/contract concerns.

Why it matters: Public comment captured a wide cross-section of community concerns on policy, safety and service delivery; trustees said they heard a number of comments that they would follow up on administratively.

What’s next: District staff said they will follow up with citizens who requested follow-up and review the specific safety and procurement complaints raised during public comment.
