Parents, students urge Manistee school board to expand AP access; staff unveils rotating AP schedule

Parents and students used the public comment period at the Manistee Area Public Schools Board of Education meeting on April 22 to call for expanded Advanced Placement offerings and for in-person AP classes in 2026–2027. Multiple speakers — including Karen Piper, Lola Piper, Ginger Wisseman, Fable Wisseman, Blythe O'Donnall, Abigail Erlandson and Abbie Huizinga — urged the board to preserve and increase AP access; Shannon Patrick spoke specifically about middle-school advanced classes.
The board then heard a staff presentation of a proposed rotating AP schedule for Manistee High School. Mr. Stoneman and Principal Nowicki described the rotation to the board and answered questions from members. Principal Nowicki said band students would still be able to participate in AP classes, and Mr. Stoneman told the board the district "would increase AP offerings if there was enrollment to support" such expansions and encouraged continued parent feedback. Board members, including Justine Slawinski and President Jim Thompson, said communication with underclassmen and families will be prioritized as schedules are finalized.
