Council approves purchase of special-purpose vehicles for MNPD SWAT operations

The committee approved RS2026-2128 to accept a cooperative purchasing agreement with MBF Industries Inc. for special-purpose law-enforcement vehicles and attachments, using previously approved grant dollars to purchase a SWAT tactical operations command vehicle.
Deputy Chief Chris Gilder told the committee the vehicle being bought under this agreement will be used exclusively by the SWAT team and provides storage for equipment, communications infrastructure and computer gear. "The current vehicle that they have has been in use since about 2000," Gilder said, noting the new purchase will replace aging equipment.
Councilmember Porterfield asked for a plain-language explanation of attachments and modifications; Gilder said the purchasing language derives from the supplier contract and that the department intends to use grant funds approved earlier by council for the SWAT command vehicle. The measure was approved unanimously (8–0).
