Marquette Senior High proposes Pre-AP, CTE and AI courses and shifts history to lower grades

Marquette Senior High School Principal Gavin Johnson presented a set of proposed curricular changes to the Marquette Area Public Schools board on Feb. 2 that would alter grade placement for history courses, expand Pre-AP and AP offerings, and add multiple career-technical education courses. Johnson said the changes aim to "move MSHS from really good to great" by increasing rigor at the 9th and 10th grade levels and opening advanced curriculum earlier for students.
Johnson described specific additions and name changes: Pre-AP Chemistry, Pre-AP Geometry and Algebra II resources, Pre-Engineering and Aviation (CTE) pathways, an Artificial Intelligence (CTE) course, a Leadership class intended for student organizers, and a Social Media & Marketing elective to teach students social media principles and analytics. He also addressed the Cyber class question, saying the current Cyber class is "low level" and the district is looking into offering a higher-level Cyber Security class in the business department for upper-level electives.
The presented materials listed adjustments to graduation requirements by cohort, a renamed Learning and Tutoring Center and an increase in elective credits to 7.5. Johnson said cohort-specific credit requirements will be clarified in the Student Handbook. The board asked questions about credits and sequencing; no budget or staffing implications were presented during the session.
