County executive pitches World War II memorial and announces hiring for veterans advocate position

County Executive Philip Odo presented a proposal to place a World War II memorial at Oppenstein Brothers Park downtown, showing a draft design that would include a polished black-granite monument, an Iwo Jima image, the five service seals and etched names of Jackson Countians who served.
"Jackson County sent thousands of its own sons and daughters into service, yet our county lacks a dedicated memorial honoring their contributions and sacrifice," the executive said, and added that Missouri Valley College is researching names for engraving. When asked about cost, the executive presented an estimate of $25,000 for the monument, installation and site preparation.
In the same report the executive said the county has appropriated and budgeted a veterans advocate position, that candidates have been interviewed, and the county is "offering a veteran advocate position to a gentleman and we're waiting for his acceptance of that." Legislators asked for dimensions and additional detail; the executive said he would provide the full slide deck and measurements to the legislature and that further discussion will occur in the newly formed World War II committee.
