MAPS board adopts FY 2025–26 budget amendment; shifts $150,000 for Chromebook program

The Marquette Area Public Schools Board unanimously approved Jan. 12 an amendment to the FY 2025–26 budget that adjusts revenue assumptions and funds a $150,000 transfer to the Capital Projects Fund for the district’s one-to-one Chromebook initiative.
Assistant Superintendent James Lampman told the board that local revenues had been increased about 5% in the amendment based on the most recent taxable-value data and that the state foundation allowance was set higher than the amendment’s original estimate (district staff used an estimate of $9,808 per pupil in the original budget; Lampman reported that the final FY 2025–26 foundation allowance was set at $10,050). Lampman noted that State Aid membership had declined by about 2% and that salaries and benefits — the largest portion of the budget — will be addressed at a future meeting.
The amendment also accounts for the State of Michigan’s extension of the universal free meal program into FY 2025–26; Lampman said the amendment increases Food Service Fund revenues by about 11% as utilization remains high. Lampman presented the Single Audit findings and told the board the district received an unmodified opinion regarding both the financial statements and federal awards. Following discussion, the board adopted the amendment by a 7-0 vote.
The board’s action authorizes the $150,000 transfer for maintaining the one-to-one Chromebook program and directs staff to bring salary and benefit adjustments to the board at a future date.
