The Marquette Area Public Schools Board approved Jan. 12 an award to Otis Elevator Company for its elevator modernization project, authorizing a base contract of $634,826 and permitting additional re-drilling options up to $100,000 for a not-to-exceed authorization of $734,826.
Assistant Superintendent James Lampman and Isaac Roberts, senior engineer with GEI Consultants, presented the project and bid analysis. GEI recommended the low bidder, Otis, noting two received bids were responsive and that re-drilling of cylinder wells was likely for some older equipment. Lampman reported GEI’s recommendation to authorize a 5% contingency above the contract to address unforeseen conditions. The board approved the motion 7-0; the motion was made by Jason Zdunek and seconded by Jennifer Ray.
GEI proposed staging the work across two summers to reduce school-year disruption and discussed expected re-drilling risks and scheduling with the board. The contract covers modernization at two elevators at Marquette Senior High School and one at Bothwell Middle School. The board’s authorization includes explicit authority to execute re-drilling options up to $100,000 as construction proceeds and recommended a contingency to handle other unforeseen changes.
