Board meeting highlights: recognitions, theatre awards and superintendent updates

At its Jan. 22 meeting the Novi board honored students and staff, recognized National Local School Board Month, heard a theatre awards presentation, and received administrative updates including a cell phone policy bill passed by the Michigan Legislature.
The Novi Community School District Board of Education issued several recognitions and informational reports during its Jan. 22 meeting. Trustees approved Weekly Wildcat recognitions for Carey Russell, Rachel Doa and Ashley Bootz; the board also recognized National Local School Board Month by a resolution presented by Superintendent Mainka. Heather McKaig, director of theatre at Novi High School, presented students who attended the State Thespian Festival and acknowledged their accomplishments.
Superintendent Mainka provided administrative updates including winter weather planning, an upcoming State of the District event for which RSVPs were requested, activity of the Culture and Climate Committee, final interviews for the Special Education director position, and that a cell phone policy bill had passed both the Michigan House and Senate. Assistant Superintendent Scicluna and others added operational notes about building staffing for winter and the kickoff of a second finance budget amendment process. The meeting included no public comments.
