Monroe Public Schools staff bring $379,600 literacy professional‑development proposal to board

Terry, a district staff member, told the board the district will present a proposal tomorrow to continue work with the Reading & Writing Project Network that would total $379,600 and be funded with a mix of 35j literacy grant money, ESSER III and early literacy professional‑development funds.
“The total amount of that proposal is 379,600,” Terry said when announcing the package, adding that Arborwood and Custer would receive more days with staff developers because they have more new teachers and greater student need. Staff said purchasing decodable text sets for classrooms would be a separate additional expense that must be paired with PD if purchased with 35j grant funds.
Andrea, the presenter, said the PD builds on last year’s work and ties teacher coaching to classroom practice and pacing maps, with an explicit emphasis on phonics and decodable texts to support early readers. “This professional development… will help us move our students forward and we will see an impact on our student achievement,” Andrea said, describing the program’s focus on teacher and leadership growth.
Board members pressed staff for funding detail and timing. Staff said the district’s 35j application and ESSER III dollars can be amended through September 30 if necessary, but that consultant scheduling makes an earlier commitment preferable to secure high‑quality staff developers. The presenter said grant rules require that any materials purchased with the 35j funds be coupled with documented professional development.
The board did not vote on the proposal at the work session; staff said the formal request and budget breakdown will appear on the board docket the following evening.
