Kindergarten challenges prompt new committees, waiver revisions and outreach

Assistant Superintendent Woolman described challenges the district faced in kindergarten during 2024–25, including higher waiver numbers, fewer students with preschool experience, toileting issues, gaps in prior medical care and limited socialization. "Kindergarten Challenges in 2024-25: Contributing factors included higher waiver numbers, fewer students with preschool experience, lack of toilet training, lack of prior medical care, and a lack of socializataion," Woolman said.
The district formed three committees in response. The Parent Communication Committee revamped the kindergarten waiver and tried summer communications (the board discussed using grant funds and sharing materials with childcare providers). The Kindergarten Open House Committee scheduled testing times at open houses so students could return for screening. The Instructional Committee provided a template for kindergarten instructional minutes to help buildings adjust tier-one lessons based on local data. No new policy was adopted at the meeting; Woolman said the committees’ work is ongoing.
