The St. Johns Public Schools Board of Education approved the sale of the 2026 School Improvement Bonds on April 13, 2026, after extended discussion about the scale of facility needs and tax impacts.
Finance Director Dan Romzek outlined the bond-sale items and described an option to use debt-retirement funds to redeem a portion of the 2010-B bonds early, which he said could save interest and potentially avoid up to 10 years of interest payments. Romzek noted the district could pay off roughly $70,000 of 2010 bond principal early under allowable timelines and explained an opportunity to structure 2026 bond repayment so the millage decreases over time.
Board members debated how to proceed. President Boak said critical infrastructure needs are now estimated at approximately $37 million and expressed support for a hybrid approach — a smaller near-term bond with consideration of a sinking fund later — and suggested a $40–50 million bond as one scenario. Secretary Watson said he preferred a bond to a sinking fund and wanted to review survey results before a final decision. Treasurer Nelson and several trustees signaled support for placing funding proposals before voters.
Trustee Randolph moved and Vice President Parker-Sternburgh supported the motion to approve the 2026 School Improvement Bond Sale; the motion passed with a 6–1 vote. The board also approved the early redemption of 2010-B bonds (motion by Trustee Darragh, supported by Vice President Parker-Sternburgh) unanimously.
What happens next: Bond sale mechanics will proceed per the finance director's recommendation; the district will present community-survey results at the April 27 workshop to inform any additional ballot decisions.
