School board approves 2026–27 calendar, will use professional development time for instruction

The Port Huron Area School District Board of Education voted Feb. 23 to approve the 2026–27 school calendar, authorizing the use of scheduled professional development time as instructional time.
The motion was made by Frank Partipilo and seconded by Matthew Ruiz; the board recorded a 5–0 vote in favor with two members absent. President Laurie Oldford had earlier noted upcoming schedule items including: "March 6th is records day for elementary schools, 1/2 day for elementary schools only. March 11th is early release for all schools." The calendar change means some staff professional development blocks will instead be assigned as student instructional periods in the coming school year.
Board members discussed the proposal as an item for action on the consent calendar; Partipilo moved the measure and Ruiz seconded before the board voted to adopt it. The board set its next meeting for March 16, 2026 at Port Huron Northern's Performing Arts Center.
