Board member: $80 million in potential transportation savings could fund safety measures

Pamela Buser Struthers, District 3 board member on the PGCPS board, told the Pedestrian Safety Work Group that a multi-year implementation report estimated roughly $80,000,000 in funds that could be shifted through transportation changes and that the board is prioritizing keeping those savings within the transportation division to support safety investments.
"The estimated funds that can be shifted has been valued in the 1st report at $80,000,000," Struthers said, and she added the board expects many of the committee's recommendations to be low- or no-cost but acknowledged some changes will require dollars. She said transportation savings from route consolidation and parent opt-outs could be reallocated to crossing-guard prioritization, traffic-calming measures and contracted traffic studies. Struthers said the board will present upfront recommendations to the superintendent and work to preserve the savings in transportation for safety uses.
The statement came as the district and the work group discussed where costs for recommended interventions would fall and whether new school construction budgets could include extended walk-zone engineering. Struthers emphasized that consolidations and other operational changes could free up funds that the board plans to keep in transportation rather than repurposing elsewhere.
