Court hears staff concerns about courthouse security and inmate-supervised record destruction

A county budget staffer raised concerns about building security after employees reported incidents involving homeless or mentally ill visitors, including one person who allegedly said they planned to shoot a staff member. The same speaker also questioned the county's records destruction procedures, saying she had requested a list of records scheduled for destruction and found some records had not been destroyed on schedule.

"I just have issue with that. If I need to take those records back over, then I need to have a storage place for them," she said, describing records that had been slated for burn events and noting discomfort that inmates were involved in the burning process when records contained personal information such as Social Security numbers. Court members said they believed the inmate work was supervised during transfers and burns but agreed the issue merited closer review and suggested staff determine secure options for handling sensitive records.

No policy changes were adopted during the session; staff asked for direction on secure storage and whether certain destruction procedures should be revised.
