Howell board hears bond update; Highlander Way Middle School likely to close after 2025-26

Howell Public Schools officials told the Board of Education on Nov. 10 that construction schedules for new elementary schools and renovations make it likely Highlander Way Middle School will close after the 2025-26 school year to allow continuous work at the building.
Mr. Ragone (AUCH), who updated the board on bond projects, said closing the middle school would speed construction at the site and improve safety by eliminating the need for students and staff to work around active construction. Superintendent Dr. MacGregor outlined a plan in which Highlander Way Middle School students would move to the Freshman Campus, and Freshman Campus students would move into the high school for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 school years; the district will evaluate whether a 9-12 high school configuration could function long term. Board members and administrators discussed impacts including use of Freshman Campus spaces by outside groups, in-district transfer requests, and drop-off/pick-up logistics.
