Officials urge SHA and municipalities be included after noting most county pedestrian fatalities occur on state roads

Irv Beckert urged that any walk-audit program begin with an overarching accessibility evaluation and include municipal governments and the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration. "The vast majority of those pedestrian fatalities occur on state facilities," he said, and therefore SHA must be part of the discussion.
Members noted many school-adjacent safety problems cross jurisdictional lines: municipal streets, county roads and state facilities. The subgroup agreed that recommendations should identify the range of implementing bodies so follow-up coordination meetings can assign action items to the appropriate agencies.
