Williamston board approves $18.14 million contract to build new Explorer Elementary

The Williamston Board of Education on Dec. 8 approved contracts totaling up to $18,141,377 to build a 39,667-square-foot addition at Explorer Elementary, including 18 classrooms, a gymnasium, main office and restrooms. The motion, made by Christopher Lewis and seconded by Deborah Wolf, passed unanimously 7-0.
Andrew Dobbs of Christman Company reviewed the bids and recommended award of contracts to be funded from the district’s 2024 Bond. Board members were told that groundbreaking is planned as soon as weather allows — “hopefully in late February or early March of 2026” — and the district expects the school to be ready for occupancy in Fall 2027. The board thanked project staff and consultants, including Dr. Adam Spina and Sarah Tynan, for their work on the project.
The contract award was a formal roll-call vote recorded as Aye: 7, Nay: 0. The board noted that the work will proceed after final contract execution and site preparations; staff said specific contractor start dates will be announced after winter site scheduling.
The decision advances the district’s infrastructure goal to improve facilities and school safety under the board’s 2024–2026 priorities.
