Board adopts Schools of Choice policy allowing K–12 nonresident applications from Marquette-Alger RESA

The Board of Education voted Feb. 16 to accept nonresident pupil applications for the 2026-27 school year from districts within the Marquette-Alger Regional Educational Service Agency, consistent with Section 105 of the State School Aid Act. The resolution limits enrollment for grade 2 and declines to accept applicants from contiguous intermediate districts under Section 105c. Eric Smith moved adoption; Cherryl Maddox-Smith seconded and the motion passed 6-0.
The resolution specifies that transportation will not be provided to nonresident pupils except where required by an Individualized Education Plan or Section 504 plan, or between designated district locations. The district will announce which grades and programs will accept nonresident pupils for the second semester by two weeks prior to the end of first semester, 2026-27. "The District will accept applications for enrollment by nonresident pupil applicants in grades K-12 residing in any school district within the Marquette-Alger Regional Educational Service Agency for the 2026-27 school year," the written resolution states.
