Lyon County approves IT security purchases to meet federal CJIS requirements

The Lyon County Commission on May 1 approved two information-technology purchases intended to bolster courthouse cybersecurity and meet federal Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) requirements.
Jean Barnett, Lyon County IT director, asked the board to approve a three-year renewal of the Courthouse SonicWall NSA3700 firewall license from CDW Government LLC for $6,622.07, to be paid from account 017-00-9001. Barnett and colleague Jamie Williams also requested approval of an amended contract for multi-factor authentication (MFA) hardware and software for up to 120 computers; the amended total is $22,854.40, replacing an earlier approval of $22,654.40. The motions carried unanimously (Duft/Bartel 3-0).
Barnett told commissioners the MFA purchase is required to comply with CJIS policies developed by the FBI. "This is mandated and directed by the Federal Government as part of CJIS policies developed by the FBI," Barnett said in presenting the request. Commissioners approved both purchases and directed payment from account 017-00-9001.
The combined cost for the two items is $29,476.47. The purchases were presented as budgeted items and compliance-related work rather than new discretionary spending.
