Chair Cindy King presented morning photos showing telephone poles located in the middle of the new Brookline Street sidewalk and loose dirt and gravel that would impede mobility devices. "In the middle of the sidewalk, there were telephone poles in the middle of the sidewalk," King said, describing a termination of the walking surface and a section where people using wheelchairs would have to move into the street.
King said she emailed Kieran, Bob Garside and Jim Smith, the highway superintendent; highway staff agreed and placed temporary materials to allow passage while utility owners move equipment. Members emphasized liability and safety concerns for people with mobility devices and discussed establishing earlier review of sidewalk plans so the commission could flag issues before construction began.
