District lays out measurable goals for reading, math and attendance

Jenny Darigan, the district federal program coordinator for Lewiston Public Schools, described the comprehensive needs assessments (CNAs) that inform the district's ESEA application and the measurable goals staff proposed for FY27.
Darigan said the district's reading and math goals aim to increase the share of students in grades 1'10 whose NWEA growth percentile exceeds the 50th percentile by 2 percentage points from spring 2026 to spring 2027. "We need our goals to be measurable," she said, adding that the numbers are labeled "preliminary" because the state conducts a post-release validation each summer.
On attendance, Darigan said the district seeks to raise by 2 percentage points the share of students without attendance issues, and she highlighted that every school in the district met its chronic absenteeism goal last school year. Committee members asked whether the 50th-percentile benchmark is national or state-based; Darigan confirmed it uses national NWEA norms and Assistant Superintendent Karen Puckett clarified it is a growth-percentile measure.
Darigan emphasized that CNAs are developed by school-level stakeholder teams and a district team and that final CNA drafts are submitted to the state as part of the application process. She said CNAs and the associated goals drive the priorities listed in the federal application.
