Joshua (Josh) Williams, director of verification and validation at Autonomous Solutions, told commissioners the company has used the east fairgrounds lot for testing for five years and requested a one-year renewal with a one-year option to extend. Williams said the company hires local mechanics and vendors, brings employees and business to the county, and provides site security that reduced transient-related police calls. "We do bring money into the county," Williams said.
Commissioners discussed liability and operational questions, including an insurance policy requirement (reference to a $3,000,000 policy), whether driverless trucks require a commercial driver's license and how equipment could support fairgrounds operations. Williams confirmed the firm vacates the site during the fair's August period and offered to reposition equipment to assist fairgrounds operations when needed.
Commissioner Perry moved to approve agreement No. 26-08; the motion was seconded and the commission voted to approve the lease.
The approved lease continues a public-private arrangement that county staff said is consistent with prior contracts and is intended to balance local economic benefits with public-safety requirements.
