Plan calls for larger truss bridge on Lawrence Hill Road to ease West River flooding

Staff presented a plan to replace the existing 50-ft span Lawrence Hill Road bridge with a 65-ft truss bridge (15-ft clear height) as recommended by the Weston Flood Study; design alternatives are constrained by the grant budget and prior RIVER project work.
A staff representative from the Windham Regional Commission said the grant application includes a proposed replacement for the Lawrence Hill Road Bridge that would increase the span from 50 feet to 65 feet and raise the clear height from 13 feet to 15 feet.
Alyssa Sabetto said the truss bridge design was selected after review with Stone Environmental and the RIVER project work. “Changes to the bridge type or style are limited at this point because the budget was based in part on the chosen bridge,” Sabetto said; she added that if a different bridge style is preferred after a potential grant award, the Vermont Department of Housing and Community Development (VT DHCD) could be approached but the outcome of such a discussion is uncertain.
Sabetto also clarified the project budget includes management costs and that the planned work would reduce—but not fully eliminate—flood risk to the village.
