Weston selectboard to apply for $3.67M CDBG-DR grant for village flood projects

The Town of Weston Selectboard agreed Sept. 23 to move forward with an application to the Community Development Block Grant—Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program seeking $3,670,354 to fund flood-resilience work in Weston Village. Alyssa Sabetto of the Windham Regional Commission said the application deadline is Sept. 30.
Sabetto told the hearing the town is the eligible applicant and the Weston Community Association would serve as a project partner. She described CDBG-DR as a “100% grant, meaning no local match is needed,” and said other funding options the town previously pursued—FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program and Congressionally Directed Spending—are “very unlikely.” The proposal would fund replacement of the Lawrence Hill Road Bridge, removal of the Mill Dam (a decision for the WCA), and creation of a vegetated flood bench along the West River to reduce flood levels in the village.
The Selectboard said it will share additional information with the community if the grant proceeds and will solicit public input before deciding whether to accept any award. No formal vote count was recorded during the hearing; minutes state the board agreed to submit the application and will revisit acceptance if funds are offered.
