Board approves Willow Creek drain repairs; Canton’s share estimated at about $27,000, assessments to appear on winter tax bill

The board approved Resolution No. 2026‑43 to authorize maintenance and repair of a critical one‑mile section of the Willow Creek Drain from Lily Road to Haggerty Road. A consultant inspection prompted the work, which includes excavation, sediment removal and bank stabilization to restore the drain to its original dimensions.
Staff read an estimate from the Wayne County Drain Commissioner's Office placing the project cost at about $350,000. Canton Township owns property within the drainage district and would be responsible for approximately $27,000 of the work. County staff said private property owners impacted by the repair will be assessed between about $29.49 and $244.85 (varies by parcel size) and those assessments will appear on the 2026 winter tax bill.
Deputy John emphasized the drain's role as a primary channel for stormwater and the benefits of clearing obstructions to reduce local flooding. The resolution was moved, supported and passed by voice vote.
