Council highlights ADA, sensory additions and safety gates in Buckroe playground plan

Council members focused follow-up questions on accessibility and child-safety features after staff presented the Buckroe Beach playground design.

Parks Director Dave McCauley described several added inclusive elements aimed at children with special needs, noting staff had incorporated a wheelchair-accessible rotating feature and multiple sensory play components. "We were able to include it, without any additional cost," McCauley said, referring to those inclusions and shade improvements.

On security and circulation, McCauley said staff vetted exit-count options with the Hampton Police Department and the city's risk staff and recommended two gated exits. "They both came back and agreed that 2 exits makes the most sense," he said. He also explained the plan to use tension-style gates that are intended to slow small children from leaving the play area while still allowing older children to exit without undue difficulty; staff said they will calibrate the gate tension with risk and safety personnel.

Mayor Chuck Tuck and Vice Mayor Gray pressed staff about how gate strength would affect very young children and whether parental presence is required in the play area; staff said the design includes central benches and shade so caregivers can remain close and that typical parental supervision rules apply. The council did not take a formal vote during the work session but staff indicated they would proceed with procurement steps if council had no objections.
