Hampton proclaims Oct. 16 ‘Lights On After School Day,’ highlights local after-school programs

The Hampton City Council proclaimed Oct. 16, 2024, as Lights On After School Day and recognized local after-school programs for their role in supporting youth.
Mayor Donnie R. Tuck read the proclamation, noting the contribution of the Hampton Community Education Enrichment Programs and other local groups. "And therefore, I, Donnie R. Tuck, Mayor, on behalf of the city council of the city of Hampton, Virginia, do hereby proclaim 10/16/2024 as lights on after school day in the city of Hampton, Virginia," he said.
Gwen Lomax, a retired teacher working with university students and volunteers, described local mentoring and free programs, including a Saturday reading program and a new CHROME-based kiddie STEM offering. "It is a joy to work with the children of Hampton," she told the council, and provided sign-up details for Oct. 16 at the Hampton Main Public Library.
Council members presented the proclamation to the volunteer group and encouraged residents to participate in local after-school offerings that provide safe and engaging learning opportunities for children.
