Commission reports mowing, leaning stones and a broken marker in Village Cemetery

During the May 22 meeting, commissioners reviewed the condition of Williamstown’s cemeteries and identified maintenance needs ahead of summer services. Matt Walker reported that "Joe’s crew mowed the Village Cemetery today," and members described leaning stones and a broken marker in the older Village section that may require replacement or a grass marker. Chair Matt Couillard said he had picked up the West Hill sign and "figured that it can be straightened out," but had not yet reinstalled it and suggested coordinating with the road foreman to mount it back in place.

Daphne Herwig said she visited West Hill twice to put out flags and to clear branches left from winter; she reported several stones leaning. Commissioners agreed Susan Lyons would inspect a broken stone in the top older section of the Village Cemetery and bring recommendations to the next meeting; past practice has sometimes been to install a flat grass marker in place of a damaged upright stone.
