VDOT reports increased ditching: 11.5 lane miles in 2024, 28.8 lane miles in 2025, commission told

"Roadside ditch clearing is prioritized by safety related work and then preventative and routine cleaning... VDOT has more than double ditching quantities from 2024 to 2025 and expect to meet... increase the accomplishments to 28.8 lane miles in 2025 within the county," a staff member read from VDOT's reply, which also cited contractor availability, funding, weather and emergencies as limiting factors.
Members asked follow-up questions about more frequent ditching; staff said constraints tied to resources and emergency response levels affect how often ditching can be done.
