Council ratifies selection of Lt. April Morse as Midvale UPD precinct chief

The Midvale City Council on Sept. 17 unanimously ratified the selection of Lieutenant April Morse as the next chief of the Midvale precinct of the Unified Police Department (UPD).
City Manager Matt Dahl explained that Midvale, as a UPD member community, conducts a local selection process for its precinct chief while final appointment requires UPD Board approvals. Dahl told the council the selection committee — which included Midvale and White City representatives and a UPD member — interviewed three candidates and selected Lt. Morse, noting her 27 years in law enforcement, 14 years of supervisory experience, a Master of Social Work from Boston University and graduation from the FBI National Academy.
Mayor Marcus Stevenson and several council members praised Morse's approach to officer mental-health supports and community engagement. Council Member Dustin Gettel described the appointment as historic, noting Lt. Morse will be the first woman to serve as Midvale precinct chief. The council suspended rules and approved RESOLUTION NO. 2024-R-43 by unanimous roll-call vote. According to staff, Lt. Morse cannot assume the role until White City and the UPD Board complete their approvals.
