University of Illinois Extension reports more than 64,000 pounds donated through Gift Garden program

Emily Swihart, a horticulture educator with the University of Illinois Extension, told the Governance, Health & Administration Committee that the Gift Garden Program partners community growers throughout the Quad Cities with local food pantries to move surplus produce to people who need food. Swihart said the program harvested and distributed just over 64,000 pounds of produce last year.
The committee heard this report as part of routine updates and approved committee business; the Extension also presented the annual levy agreement for processing through county channels. Swihart framed the program as a community partnership aimed at bridging excess produce and food pantry needs.
