Chair warns IDOT bridge options could affect Historic Courthouse Square

Chairman Richard Brunk reported that he and County Administrator Jim Grafton met with Illinois Department of Transportation officials about options for the Centennial Bridge approach. Brunk said IDOT had previously expressed confidence they could avoid the Historic Courthouse Square, but that last week officials raised the possibility of using a portion of the square for the bridge approach and descent. Brunk told the committee he shared concerns about impacts to monuments, potential loss of space for any Justice Center expansion, and the square's history as county seat land granted by presidential land grant in 1841.
IDOT is preparing detailed renderings of two 15th Street options so the county can review specifics. Chairman Brunk said he will share more information as renderings and designs are available; no decision or formal county direction was recorded in the Committee of the Whole minutes.
