Resident urges VDOT review after 24 crashes on Hog Island Road

Resident Ray Phelps urged the Surry County Board of Supervisors to press the Virginia Department of Transportation to study safety measures at Hog Island Road and the Hog Island/Route 10 intersection. "We've had 24 accidents on Hog Island Road in the last 2 years," Phelps said, adding that roughly "20% of them are at that intersection." He told the board one recent crash entrapped a deputy who had to be flown out.
Phelps asked the board to request an engineering review that could lead to speed reductions, rumble strips, flashing stop signs or other countermeasures. "Maybe a flashing stop sign or something that would be, maybe some, bumper guard bumpers in the road leading up to that or slow the speed down," he said. County participants and an agency official said traffic engineers will need to analyze crash data and speeds before recommending changes. The sheriff nd board members acknowledged enforcement and engineering are both parts of the solution but emphasized that an engineering study is the next step.
The board directed staff to forward the request to the appropriate traffic-engineering reviewers and to follow up with VDOT on possible countermeasures. No immediate changes were ordered at the meeting; participants said they will await the formal engineering review and VDOT—indings.
