Local groups, schools and WestCare plan 988 outreach, trainings and 5K events

Randy Genueva, who introduced himself as representing District 1 and as a founder of the Awareness Warriors Foundation, described team-based runs and a planned Trail of Hope 5K on Sept. 26 and urged community members to follow the group's Facebook page and help recruit teams. "Suicide prevention, suicide in general is very, very personal to me," Genueva said, and he explained that the group uses movement and team events to build connection and reduce isolation.
Other speakers described operational supports: Melissa Ramirez, director for guidance and counseling with UISD, said school counselors and principals were provided free resource kits and will host back-to-school outreach in September; Adrian Esparza of the fire department described a firefighter peer-support team that follows up after critical incidents; and Earl Medina of WestCare described recent backpack giveaways and school events that reached hundreds of students. Organizers also promoted ASSIST and other suicide-intervention trainings and asked partners to help publicize National 988 Day materials and the 5K registration QR codes.
