The Nashville General Hospital finance committee approved a two-year contract with AMN Language Services after staff said the vendor provides critical language-line services and equipment the hospital needs to meet regulatory requirements.
Dr. Melanie Thomas presented the contract as a two-year agreement with a presented total of $431,000.892 and said the expense is budgeted and will not increase the organization’s annual costs. Members asked whether that figure was an annual cost or the two-year total; staff indicated the figure was being discussed in annual terms during the meeting and that the contract is budgeted within the hospital’s annual plan. Thomas said AMN has provided interim fee-for-service support and has supplied replacement kiosks and handsets during recent regulatory work.
Board members, including Mr. Harvey, pressed staff on whether the hospital could continue operating on a fee-for-service basis if the contract was delayed. Thomas replied that fee-for-service could continue but the hospital would miss replacement equipment, additional kiosks and the continuity that comes from a formal managed service. A committee member noted state regulatory issues make proper interpretation services legally necessary for certain non-English-speaking patients; staff confirmed the language line is essential to compliance.
Members also raised the timing of contract renewals and asked whether the hospital could normalize renewal windows so major contracts align with the fiscal year. Hospital staff described a centralized contract-matrix tracking tool and said a renewal calendar will be shared with leadership to provide quarterly and annual visibility.
After discussion the committee moved, seconded and voted to approve the contract. The chair announced the motion carried.
