Panel passes bill letting Bureau staff train new Ethics Commission and Registry members
Summary
HB 1506 would allow the executive director or general counsel of the Bureau of Ethics and Campaign Finance (in addition to the attorney general's office) to conduct required training for new Ethics Commission or Registry of Election Finance members; the subcommittee passed the bill 7–0.
Representative Hicks described HB 1506 to the subcommittee, saying the bill would broaden who may provide mandatory training to newly appointed Ethics Commission and Registry of Election Finance board members so they can participate in meetings without delay.
"This bill would allow the executive director or the general counsel of the Bureau of Ethics and Campaign Finance to conduct training for a new board member," Representative Hicks said, adding that the change would prevent new members from needing to miss meetings because of scheduling conflicts with the Attorney General's office. The sponsor said the Attorney General’s office has a heavy workload and that authorizing bureau staff to deliver the training would provide scheduling flexibility.
The committee voted 7–0 to advance the bill to the full State and Local committee.
