Committee advances amended bill removing nonresident voting provision

Representative Reno presented an amended version of HB 0851 that removes subsection g, a provision the sponsor said allowed U.S. citizens born abroad who had never lived in the United States to register and vote in a parent’s county.
"Deleting subsection g brings this section back in line with the constitutional standard," Representative Reno said, explaining the amendment makes the statute consistent with Tennessee’s residency requirement. He said the bill does not affect military voters or other categories protected under different subsections.
The committee added the amendment, voted on the amended bill, and the clerk reported six ayes, zero nos and one present-not-voting; the bill will proceed to the full State and Local committee.
