Subcommittee advances bill to let counties query SAVE system for voter verification

The House Elections & Campaign Finance Subcommittee voted to advance HB 2,185 to the full State and Local committee after a short presentation by the bill sponsor.
Sponsor Leder Lambert told members the measure "authorizes the electronic portal, which each county administrator of elections will use to access information to verify applications to register to vote to access data from the systematic alien verification for entitlements, which is the SAVE program of the United States Department of Homeland Security, and it makes such a data available via a secure web service." The sponsor said the bill follows up on last year’s legislation by giving local election officials a way to check the SAVE system if the federal service is available.
The committee opened the board for a vote and the clerk reported six ayes and one no; the chair announced the bill "passes on to state and local full." No amendments were offered during the subcommittee hearing. The bill record and the committee vote were entered into the official minutes.
