Council okays code change to allow golf-safety nets for properties abutting courses

The council approved Ordinance 25-11 on July 15 to add language to city code (10-4-8) permitting golf-safety nets on lots adjacent to golf courses, after planning staff said the change responds to a May public comment from a resident who asked to protect property from errant golf balls.
Planning staff Alex explained the ordinance was developed after the resident report and research with other cities. "A resident came up and explained that he lives right next to a golf course, and fortunately, a lot of the golf balls are put into his property and damaging. And so he just wanted to put up a net to be able to protect his belongings," Alex said. The proposed code sets a 6-foot allowance without a building permit and requires a permit for netting above that height; planning recommended a case-by-case exception process for very tall nets.
Councilmembers asked staff to tighten language to make clear nets are permitted only where a property "abuts" a golf course and to specify permit thresholds; staff agreed and the council approved the ordinance with that clarification. The Planning Commission had forwarded the item with a positive recommendation and no public input at its June 12 hearing.
