Bernards Township officials held a public finance presentation to explain how property assessments are established, how tax bills are calculated and what options exist for payment and relief. Sean McCarthy, the township’s chief financial officer, opened the session and introduced the assessor and tax collector to present practical steps residents can take to review and, if necessary, appeal their assessments.
"This year, we really wanted to focus specifically on assessment and collection," McCarthy said, introducing the panel. Assessor Dave Centrelli walked through what the assessor’s office counts as real property (land and permanent structures) and discussed the office’s inspection cycle and valuation date. Tax Collector Kevin Santangelo described billing schedules, a county delay in certifying this year’s tax rate and an extended grace period for the third quarterly payment. Presenters urged residents with questions to contact the township offices directly and noted the staff’s availability for follow-up.
