The South Ogden City Council opened a Truth in Taxation public hearing on Aug. 5 to take comments on a proposed maximum city property tax rate of 0.002578, up from the current 0.002507. Mayor (speaker 1) told residents the change would be limited to the city’s portion of the tax bill and described the effect on the average home the city uses for valuation: “This would increase the average home in South Ogden, which they consider to be $483,000… $2.72 per month,” and that the change would provide “approximately $230,000 more than if we stayed at the county rate.”
The mayor explained the statutory mechanics that require a Truth in Taxation hearing when a jurisdiction proposes a rate different from the county-certified rate and said holding the hearing gives the council more time to finalize the fiscal year 2026 budget. Councilmember Andrew (speaker 6) confirmed the city posted required notices (site, published class A notice and official website) and reiterated that the city receives about 22% of the overall property tax bill. Staff and council emphasized that tonight’s action was only to receive public comment and that the council will take a final vote on the budget and any rate change at the next meeting in two weeks.
