Judge Miller presented Sheriff Belt's staffing request to the court: the sheriff aims to eliminate two current positions and create two new positions at $45,000 each, plus add an investigator and an environmental clerk funded from SB 22. Commissioners questioned whether titles and grouping should afford parity with existing administrative roles.
"Mister Belt has currently has 2 positions. It is his intent to eliminate those 2 positions and create 2 new positions at 45,000. And, he has presented to the court... to fund those positions as well as a new investigator, as well as an environmental clerk... out of SB 22 funds," Judge Miller said. Commissioners discussed listing those roles under a paralegal line versus executive assistant categories and raised concerns about internal pay equity for longer-serving employees.
The court asked staff to clarify whether the environmental position and other titles fit within existing pay groups and to return with job descriptions and an updated budget impact so the court could consider funding in the FY2025 proposal.
