Council approves $4.59M Dallas County agreement for roundabout and Jefferson Street upgrades

The Grand Prairie City Council on April 7 approved a Dallas County funding agreement that will provide $4,590,000 toward two transportation projects: a large roundabout on the city’s east side at Main and Jefferson and reconstruction of Jefferson Street between State Highway 161 and Cimarron Trace.
“This will give us a total of $4,590,000 towards these 2 projects,” said Carol De Vries, director of Transportation and Mobility, during the staff presentation. De Vries said the roundabout project is in the roughly $8,000,000 range and the Jefferson Street segment is about $5,700,000, and that construction is planned to start this summer. She told council the Jefferson work will replace asphalt with concrete “to better handle all the truck traffic that is diverted.”
Council members and residents asked about phasing, timelines and enforcement. De Vries said the roundabout construction is expected to take about 18 months and the Jefferson Street work about 9–12 months depending on contractor phasing. Mayor Ron Jensen and other council members discussed the project’s goal of diverting heavy truck traffic off Main Street.
A motion to approve the agreement was made and seconded; the council voted in favor and the motion carried.
What happens next: staff said the city will go out for bid after finalizing the agreement and present a comprehensive financing plan for downtown renovations in coming months.
