Fire Chief Doug Acred presented a proposal to address a pay cap for first‑year volunteer (Class V) firefighters. Under the prior arrangement, Class V firefighters were capped at 72 paid hours and did not receive full pay for a 76‑hour class. The board approved a one‑year cap of $1,980 for first‑year volunteers effective July 1, 2025 (fiscal year 2026) on a motion by Ald. Mark A. Barber, seconded by Ald. Donna R. Butler.
Chief Acred explained that other classes would remain unchanged but that the change was intended to compensate first‑year volunteers appropriately for required training. The minutes record the motion and its passage; no additional funding source or ongoing change beyond the first‑year cap was recorded in the transcript.
